What happened to mom?

When Jack and his mom first moved to Seattle they went to these boat races where they met some kind of creepy guys who they went back to their house with where they promised Jack a bike and a nice sandwich. Instead given a crappy sandwich and no bike like he was promised. Later that night the mom went out with them, when she came back home she was out of breathe and crying. She didn't tell Jack what happened but all you could do is assume the worst must have happened to her.
